Buyer’s guide

New, open box, used or refurbished — what’s the difference?

Every item on our shelf carries one of four conditions. They aren’t marketing labels — each one tells you something specific about what has happened to the device before it reached you.

Brand new

Brand new means sealed and never opened — the device is exactly as it left the manufacturer.

Open box

The box has been opened, but the device inside is like-new and unused. Boxes get opened for all kinds of ordinary reasons, and none of them change what’s inside.

Used — and what the grades mean

A used device has had an owner before you, but it has never been opened up inside and no parts have been replaced. Because it has been used, it may show some wear, so we grade the outside:

  • Grade A — looks close to new. You may have to hunt for a mark.
  • Grade B — light signs of use, such as fine scratches.
  • Grade C — noticeable wear you’ll see at a glance.
  • Grade D — well used, with clear scuffs and marks.

The grade describes how a device looks, not how well it works. Right now, most of what’s on our shelf is Grade A used phones.

See exactly what each grade allows — screen, body, battery and packaging, with close-ups and a side-by-side table.

Refurbished

A refurbished device has been opened and had one or more parts replaced — a screen, a battery or a charging port, for example. It looks new from the outside, so there’s no wear to grade: refurbished devices don’t get a grade at all. We usually have only a few at a time, so if that’s what you’re after, ask what’s in.

Packaging is listed separately

Condition describes the device; packaging is its own line on the tag. Some items come sealed, some in the original box and some in a pouch. A used phone in its original box isn’t a better phone than the same grade in a pouch — the condition and the grade are what matter.

About the warranty

Brand new devices carry the manufacturer’s warranty. Open box, used and refurbished devices carry our 90-day warranty, which covers functional defects — something that stops working the way it should. It doesn’t cover cosmetic wear, accidental damage, liquid damage or change of mind.

All sales are final. That’s exactly why we want you to look the device over and test it before you pay.

How to check a used phone in store

Ask to see the exact unit you’re buying and take a few minutes with it:

  1. Look it over in good light — screen, corners, back and camera lenses — and check the wear matches the grade.
  2. Open a plain white screen, then a dark one, to spot marks, dead pixels or uneven patches.
  3. Drag an app icon around every part of the screen to check the touch works edge to edge.
  4. Try the front and back cameras, the speakers, the microphone and every button.
  5. Plug it in and make sure it charges.
  6. Check the battery health if the phone shows it, and ask us about it.
  7. Make sure it’s signed out of any previous accounts and ready to set up as yours.

Every pre-owned phone we sell is IMEI and blacklist checked and securely wiped before it reaches the shelf. Seeing it for yourself is still the point.
